Virtual Kōnane Experience via Zoom

Join us for an immersive and captivating 2-hour Virtual Kōnane Experience via Zoom with the renowned Uncle John Kaohelaulii! This engaging session invites you and a partner to delve into the traditional Hawaiian game of Kōnane, often called Hawaiian checkers.

During this interactive workshop, Uncle John will expertly guide you through the essential rules and basic strategies of Kōnane, ensuring that the experience is both enjoyable and educational. As you play, you'll not only sharpen your strategic thinking abilities but also gain valuable insights into the rich cultural significance of Kōnane within Hawaiian traditions. The game serves as a window into historical practices, particularly emphasizing the central theme of resource management in Hawaiian culture.

This experience is designed for participants aged 12 and up and is perfect for those looking to explore Hawaii's vibrant heritage while having fun with a partner. What a unique opportunity to connect with Uncle John in a meaningful way, fostering a greater appreciation for the game and its cultural context.

Things to Know:

- Best for ages 12 and up.

- Number of seats: Each registration covers a team of two players; one seat equals one team (e.g., you and your partner).

- Requirements: A strong internet connection and the Zoom app (which can be accessed via a free plan) must be installed on your device.

- Space: Ensure you have a comfortable, well-lit area with a table and chairs to facilitate play.

- Materials Needed:

   - A printer to print out the temporary playing board for Kōnane.

   - 20 Lima beans and 20 Kidney beans or any two kinds of objects that fit into the holes of the board to serve as temporary game pieces. These should be distinctly colored to represent each player's pieces.

To enhance your ongoing journey with Kōnane, after the virtual experience concludes, you will receive one Pueo Papamū that serves as a guide to further exploration of the game and its cultural context. Additionally, each participant will receive a complimentary ticket to a future Zoom Kōnane tournament, which promises another exciting opportunity to engage with the game.

What does the price cover?

The price covers one seat at the table for two people. Both of you get the ʻike or cultural knowledge about Kōnane and one pueo papamū to continue your journey and one spot at a future virtual Kōnane tournament to test your skills against other players.

What if I don't have a playing partner at the last minute?

I'm sorry, but we are unable to accommodate you. You'll have to follow along. We may have to reschedule your experience for next month.

Can I still participate in this experience with my child who is under 12?

Best for ages 12 and up, but it depends on the child. If your child is under 8 years of age but, as a family, you play a lot of board games, it should work. Children ages 6 to 8 tend to struggle with the strategic aspects of playing Kōnane, but it is a great way to build a personal relationship between you and your child.
